Candle Care 101: Make Every Burn Even, Clean, and Long
Most candle problems, tunneling, smoke, weak scent, come from two skippable mistakes in the first week of ownership. Here's the two-minute routine that prevents all of them, for Memewick candles or any jar candle you own.
The first burn is the whole game
Wax has memory. On the first burn, let the melt pool reach the full edge of the jar before extinguishing, roughly 2 to 3 hours for a 3 inch jar. Cut it short and the candle memorizes the smaller circle, tunneling down the middle and stranding wax on the walls forever. Set aside a movie-length window for burn one.
Trim to a quarter inch, every time
Before every burn, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (a nail clipper works if you lack a trimmer). Long wicks make tall, flickering, sooty flames and mushroomed tips; trimmed wicks burn low, steady, and clean. If the flame ever exceeds an inch tall, blow it out, let it cool, and trim.
Safety, the non-negotiables
Burn on a stable, heat-safe surface with a foot of clearance from anything flammable. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it out of reach of kids, cats, and drafty windows. Stop burning when a half inch of wax remains, glass with a dry bottom gets hot fast. To extinguish cleanly with less smoke, dip the wick into the melt pool and straighten it back up.
Frequently asked questions
How do I fix a tunneled candle?
Wrap foil around the jar's rim leaving a chimney hole over the flame, and burn for an hour or two. The trapped heat melts the wall wax back level. Then respect the full melt pool on future burns.
Why does my candle smoke?
Almost always an untrimmed wick. Trim to a quarter inch, and keep the candle out of drafts, moving air makes any flame flicker and soot.
How long should a 12 oz candle last?
With quarter-inch trims and full melt pools, a single-wick 12 oz candle typically delivers dozens of hours of burn time across many sessions.
